Do I need to make fire precautions?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Many people investigate the security and safety aspects of their shipping container before they purchase the structure. This is well advised and helps to create the situation where your container is perfectly suited to the function which it is required to do right from the start.

Also of course, you will have the piece of mind that you have made an informed decision on the structure and have every base covered in this regard.

One question which many people ask is whether or not the containers are fireproof? Obviously no structure is going to be one hundred percent fireproof however containers which are made from steel and marine plywood offer a very high level of resistance to this.

You need to consider the products which you are placing within the structure and carry out a risk assessment of this, as you would with any method of storage.

Make sure that if people are going to be in the structure on a regular basis that there is the proper fire exits and that there is an extinguisher present in a very prominent place. A fire blanket may also be a good idea as safety cannot be compromised, no matter how unlikely it is to be called in to action.

Start planning for Christmas now!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

As we have previously mentioned, the British summer does not last forever and once the nights start drawing in then for many people, the countdown to Christmas begins.

Due to this, people who conduct special events during the festive period are encouraged to make their arrangements as early as possible to avoid disappointment, whether this is buying that special gift or organising a Christmas party for example.

This can also be the case for more flamboyant festive activities which embody the use of storage containers. Perhaps the most common of these is creating a Santa’s Grotto for children to come and meet the great man himself and to be provided with small gifts as a memento.

This is popular in a wide range of venues and can certainly help generate some much needed cash for the festive period. But obviously these things need planning especially in terms of the design and also the location of the structure.

It is therefore important to start making your plans early and making sure that you not only provide a large amount of children with an experience to remember but you also increase your festive cash flow!

Pass on your knowledge and experience

Monday, July 28th, 2008

As we have seen in many of the articles on this site, the role of storage containers in today’s society is wide and varied.

From traditional storage units to luxury hotels, we have just scratched the surface in terms of all the functions which these perform in a cost effective manner.

Despite this however, many people do not think about storage containers for jobs which they regularly perform. This is where we come in – by spreading the message of the eclectic range of functions that these structures perform we hope that many people will recognise how they can provide answers to some of their storage issues.

The power of the word of mouth cannot be overestimated and therefore if storage containers have helped you the please do tell us and also tell others who would benefit from the same.

Make sure that you give people honest and objective opinions of your storage container experience, so they get their structure just right. Of course we can answer any query which they may have regarding the actual logistics of the container, but in a way you are our most prized asset in that you already have successful experience with the structures and are therefore in an ideal position to pass on your knowledge to others.

Make sure that you have more than one key cut!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

No matter what your reasoning for storage containers may be, you need to be certain that your property is safe and every precaution is made in this regard.

As a result the vast majority of container structures employ a locking facility which keeps the contents safe from theft or vandalism.

However, it is important that you make certain precautions yourself in terms of any locks which you place on the containers.

The most important thing to remember is to get more than one set of keys cut for the locks. You cannot guarantee that one of the keys may be misplaced or lost at some point and therefore to avoid excess amounts of hassle, it is always comforting to know that there are other keys out there.

Perhaps the best idea is to have three keys cut, one which you will use as the master key, one which you place in a safe place at home, and one additional key which you give to a trustworthy friend or partner.

The last thing which you want is to only have one key and be in the position where you urgently need to access your property but cannot do this due to the key being misplaced or lost.

Safety measures are not an excuse for carelessness

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Last week, we brought you the story of a young child who was trapped inside a storage container which was acting as a toy store. Whilst checks should have been carried out on the store before it was locked, the case has brought to light several issues regarding the role of storage containers and children in general.

First of all, do not think that once a storage container has been installed, for whatever the reason, that it cannot be modified or altered to best suit your requirements. For example, windows can be placed within the container which will aid the security of the structure, especially where children are involved.

Obviously this is no substitution for you own vigilance, however you really need to be covering every base when it comes to young children.

Secondly, it is possible to install emergency exits within the structure, in the same manner that these are placed within traditional buildings. This would give the added piece of mind that should anyone become stuck within the structure, everything is in place for their safety and rescue.

Yet no matter how many precautionary measures you make within the structure itself, you must display a high amount of personal organisation in making sure in your own mind that these measures will never be used.

Safety measures should not be an excuse for you to dilute your own awareness of the situation and if you remember this then everyone will enjoy the facility which it offers in a safe environment.

Make sure your cricket equipment is safe this winter

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Sadly, the English summer time is fast approaching it’s conclusion – even though many of us are wondering if we have even had a summer as yet!

With this, is a transitional period which makes the journey from summer ultimately into winter a much smoother affair. The short sleeve shirts and shorts start to make way for the jumpers and the raincoats as the focus descends on to Christmas which comes all too quickly.

As a result, many of the local cricket teams are forced into placing the stumps and equipment away until the spring where they will be dusted off ready for the start of a new season.

With this in mind, the equipment needs to be safely stored and placed in a manner which will keep them in pristine condition over the winter months. Storage containers therefore provide the ideal way in which you can store your equipment in a safe manner and one which will guarantee that you are ready for action at the start of next season.

It is normal that two keys will be cut for the structure – one to be held by the captain, and the other for a responsible member of the team who will not lose it over the summer months!

Think carefully about your winter storage requirements and do not hesitate to ask us any questions which you may have.

Travelodge invest in novel container based structures

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

A system of constructing shipping container structures developed by George & Harding together with engineers Bupo Happold is set to be unveiled as one of the UK’s newest hotels.

The method of construction is said to be twenty five percent quicker than traditional methods and exemplifies the cost effectiveness of the project.

The containers used have been shipped over from China and are easily transported and stacked together. Further savings are made due to the fact that this method does not employ a steel frame.

Travelodge Verbus, who are overseeing the project, have also invested in a similar construction within Uxbridge – close to Heathrow Airport. Each container embodies two rooms which are fully fitted with the normal bedroom features and when placed, create a corridor which generates easily access to each and every room.

The containers are positioned carefully by a mobile crane, which staggering only takes a matter of minutes to complete. When the container has been placed in the required position, they are secured with steel bolts. At this point, the cladding can be developed and the structure completed.

So next time you are residing in a Travelodge hotel, make sure you have a look at the structure and determine if you are lucky enough to be staying in one of these novel and impressive structures!

Make sure you carry out the relevant checks when working with children

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

We have previously highlighted many of the roles which storage containers can play in today’s society. As part of this we have looked into the benefit these can have on a local community both financially and also in terms of the added opportunities which they provide.

However, depending on the function of the container, we would advise that in certain circumstances extra special care is taken.

The case in point refers to a little boy in a Manchester nursery who was locked in a container which was being used as a toy store. Benjamin Sangi became locked in the container for several hours before anxious parents and staff members found him.

When employing storage containers to benefit young children, particularly within a nursery or school setting, then it is imperative that you make certain that nobody is still inside the structure when you come to lock it. Due to the properties of the structure small containers make struggle to make the required amount of noise to indicate that they are still in it, and therefore you should conduct a thorough check that it is empty before leaving.

A little common sense in using the containers will mean that these continue to play a safe and valued role within every setting possible.

Think carefully about catering for your wedding abroad

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

In today’s society, many people decide to get married abroad and this trend is rising every year. This is most commonly carried out during the summer as people travel to the hottest places on the planet to conduct their special event.

After the actual ceremony itself, the most important thing to arrange is the reception and the celebrations following the event. Depending on where you conduct the marriage will determine how easy this is to conclude. Commonly countries within the EU are easier to sort out the technicalities than those outside.

Many people want to supply their own catering for the wedding and this sometimes proves to be problematic in terms of the transportation of it. Refrigerated Containers are very accessible within the UK, yet the problems surround the actual transportation of the products.

There are many ways around this, although you do have do bear in mind the amount of people who will be present at your wedding, and whether this method of transportation will be the most effective. If a relatively small number of guests will be present then there may not be much point in paying a large amount for your products to be shipped.

Should you wish to talk about this, or any other issue surrounding refrigerated containers then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Solve your storage issues and preserve those props!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

We all seem to spend most of our time working in one capacity or another ,and as a result many companies are encouraging what is called a work-life balance.

This can embody anything from flexible working hours, to a programme of events and programmes which help you to switch off from the pressures of work and take some well deserved rest.

One popular way of doing this is to go for a night out at the theatre – and this country is blessed with a large number of both local and national groups who regularly perform eclectic and interesting plays.

However, one thing which many local organisations are short of is space – maybe not performing space , but certainly storage space.

This is where effective use of storage containers can help your local community in a pertinent and worthwhile way. Many groups of actors rely on people’s garage space or lofts to store costumes and props, and when the shows are over, far too much is confined to the scrap heap when with a little thought, these could be preserved for generations to come.

If this sounds like a problem which you are experiencing then do not hesitate to contact us with your exact requirements and safeguard your items forever.
