How shipping containers can be used as accommodation
Thursday, December 24th, 2009Shipping containers are used for transporting goods from location to another. After transporting containers, it is expensive to send them back to the ports, so many empty containers get dumped on the site. Shipping containers can be recycled into other items, but there is even a better solution, as shipping containers can also be used as accommodation.
In many countries, shipping containers are used as makeshift accommodation, although recently, architects have started to design comfortable living spaces out of them.
Advantages of using shipping containers as homes
Many people think that shipping containers as homes are similar to mobile homes, although there is lot of difference between the two. Firstly, mobile homes are not tough, as they only have a steel frame, and they can’t be stacked on top of each other like shipping containers.
Secondly, during harsh weather, such as storms, mobile homes can be unsafe as they can’t resist high wind pressure. This isn’t the case with shipping containers as they can easily handle high wind pressure.
It is very simple to design homes out of a shipping container, although you need to have some pre-designed plans.
Shipping containers can be a good solution to housing problems, although in some areas a special permit is required.
